Rooted Week 1

Weathering Life's Storms

Have you ever experienced a truly bad storm? Maybe it was a hurricane, tornado, or some wild weather where the wind howled and debris flew everywhere. After the storm passes, some of the biggest trees—strong and tall—can end up toppled over, completely uprooted. Yet, others standing nearby remain upright. What's the difference?

The answer isn’t what’s visible above ground, but what lies beneath: the roots.

  • Roots are what keep trees stable through any storm.

  • In the same way, the strength of our spiritual life is found in our roots, not just what’s visible on the outside.

  • Many Christians look strong outwardly but lack deep roots, so when life’s pressures and disappointments come, they struggle.

This is what Paul wants us to see in the book of Ephesians as he teaches us to be properly rooted in our faith (01:29).

Big Truth: Everything We Need Has Already Been Given

Before Paul talks about what we should do as believers, he reminds us of what God has already done (03:30). Look at Ephesians 1:3:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” (emphasis mine)

Key Point 1:

Everything we need spiritually has already been provided in Christ.

  • We are not waiting for God to bless us; He has blessed us.

  • Every spiritual blessing needed for salvation, victory, growth, and God’s purpose is already ours (05:19).

  • The world chases satisfaction through money, success, reputation, or followers – but as soon as we achieve one goal, another always appears.

Instead, we’ve been given spiritual riches in Christ. Let’s not live as spiritual paupers when God calls us to live as spiritual heirs!

We Are Blessed IN CHRIST

Throughout Ephesians, Paul repeats the phrase “in Christ” or “in Him.”

  • Our blessings are not found in circumstances, but in Christ (11:39).

  • In Christ, we are chosen, adopted, redeemed, and forgiven — regardless of what is happening around us (12:03).

  • Circumstances will always change—jobs, relationships, the economy, even our feelings—but Jesus never changes.

Key Point 2:

Our blessings are found in Christ.

  • Just like a phone has to be plugged into a power source, we need to be connected to Christ for our strength and stability (13:24).

  • Don’t wait until your “spiritual battery” is at 2% before plugging in. Stay connected through His Word and prayer every day.

  • If you’re plugged into anything other than Jesus, you’ll always be running on empty (15:17).

Our Future Is Secure

Paul says we are “sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance” (16:05). In ancient times, a seal meant ownership, authenticity, and security.

  • If you belong to Jesus, your future is secure—God Himself seals you and guarantees your inheritance (17:11).

  • Your salvation is sustained not by your ability to cling to God, but by God’s ability to hold on to you (18:02).

  • Life is unpredictable, but Jesus is our unchanging anchor (19:00).

Key Point 3:

Our future is secure in Christ.

No matter how uncertain tomorrow may seem, we can rest and rejoice because God holds our future in His hands (20:34).

Where Are Your Roots?

Before Paul tells us what to do, he reminds us who we are:

“You have been blessed, you have been chosen, you have been adopted, you have been redeemed, you have been forgiven, you have been sealed. All of that is found in Christ.” (21:17)

The Christian life begins with identity, not activity.

If your roots feel shallow, if you’ve been putting your identity in your job or in what others think, remember:

  • You are God’s child.

  • You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  • It’s time to tap into the spiritual riches God has already provided.

Reflection:

What do your roots look like today?

Are they shallow, or are they securely grounded in Christ?

Let’s remember who we are, rely on what He’s already done, and stay rooted in Him.
